# Portofino in February: Pretty, Quiet, and a Bit Bleak

Let’s be straight with you. Portofino in February is not the Portofino of your Instagram feed. The harbour is grey, the hills are dripping, and most of the restaurants have a handwritten “chiuso” sign taped to the door. At 9°C with around 50mm of rain across the month, you’ll spend a decent chunk of your visit in a waterproof jacket rather than a sundress.

And honestly? Depending on who you are, that’s either a dealbreaker or the whole point.

The crowds are essentially gone. The day-trippers who normally pour off boats from Santa Margherita have largely vanished. You can stand in the piazzetta — that absurdly photogenic little square — and actually absorb it without elbowing past someone doing a selfie stick panorama. The village feels like it belongs to the handful of people who actually live there, and that’s quietly special.

What’s open is limited though, and you should plan around this. A few bars will serve you coffee and a brioche in the morning. One or two trattorias keep winter hours, usually lunch service only. The church of San Giorgio is open. You can walk the trail up to Castello Brown and get genuinely dramatic views over the Ligurian Sea, assuming the cloud lifts enough to cooperate. The hiking paths around the headland are beautiful in this raw, moody way that summer never offers.

Is it worth it? For photographers, couples wanting somewhere romantic without the performance of it, or people who genuinely like off-season travel — yes, absolutely. For someone expecting the full glamorous Mediterranean experience, save it for May or September.

**One practical tip:** Don’t rely on finding food spontaneously. Check opening hours before you go, message restaurants ahead, and know that the one place that is open might close early because it’s Tuesday and quiet. Pack snacks. The village is tiny and beautiful and completely indifferent to your hunger.

Come with low expectations and the right coat, and February Portofino will probably surprise you.
