# Cagliari in May: Worth the Trip?

May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Cagliari, and I’d say that without hesitation. The city hasn’t yet surrendered itself to the summer tourist machine, prices are still reasonable, and the weather sits at that sweet spot where you can actually walk around without dissolving.

**What it actually feels like**

Twenty-two degrees sounds modest on paper, but in practice it feels warm and genuinely pleasant. You’ll want a light layer for evenings, particularly if you’re sitting outside by the marina, but days are comfortable for wandering the Castello district, climbing up through the old city walls, and spending real time on your feet without suffering for it. There’s about 20mm of rain spread across the month, meaning you might catch a shower or two, nothing dramatic, but worth having a small umbrella somewhere in your bag rather than getting caught out.

**Crowds and atmosphere**

Sardinians are still going about their actual lives in May. The beaches at Poetto aren’t yet overrun, you can get a table at a decent restaurant without planning three days ahead, and the archaeological museum up in Castello is genuinely enjoyable to visit rather than a shoulder-to-shoulder endurance test. The city feels alive but breathable.

**What’s open**

Essentially everything. Restaurants, museums, boat trips around the coastline, day excursions to the flamingo lagoons at Molentargius. The flamingos are often particularly active in spring, which is a legitimate highlight and one that catches a lot of visitors off guard in the best way.

**Is it worth visiting?**

For couples, solo travellers, and anyone who prioritises actually experiencing a place over beach-collapsing, absolutely yes. Families with young children might find July and August more geared toward them, but May offers real quality of experience.

**One practical tip**

Book your accommodation earlier than you think necessary. May is increasingly popular with European travellers who’ve figured out exactly what I just told you, and the good mid-range options in the historic centre fill up faster than the month’s reputation suggests.
