# Lecce in April: Worth the Trip?

Lecce in April is genuinely one of the better times to go, and I don’t say that about everywhere in southern Italy.

The weather sits around 18°C, which sounds modest but feels genuinely pleasant when you’re wandering the baroque old town on foot. You’re not sweating through your shirt while staring at an ornate church facade, which honestly makes a real difference when Lecce’s whole appeal is standing around looking at intricate stonework. There’s some rain — around 30mm across the month — so expect a few grey afternoons and the occasional shower. It’s not relentless, but pack a light jacket you don’t mind getting damp.

Crowds are manageable but not nonexistent. Easter, depending on the year, can bring a noticeable spike — Lecce takes its religious processions seriously and Semana Santa here is atmospheric and worth seeing, but the town does fill up for that specific week. Outside of Easter, you’ll find the main piazzas breathing normally. You can actually photograph Piazza del Duomo without someone’s elbow in the frame.

Everything worth visiting is open. The churches, the Roman amphitheatre, the baroque palaces, the restaurants — April is well inside the tourist season for Puglia. You won’t hit the shuttered disappointment you sometimes get in February. The surrounding Salento countryside is also green and flowering, which is genuinely beautiful if you rent a car and explore.

Who is April right for? Honestly, almost everyone. Couples, solo travellers, anyone who hates summer heat, architecture enthusiasts, food-focused travellers. It’s slightly less ideal if you have young kids who need beach days — the sea is technically there but still cold enough to discourage actual swimming.

**One practical tip:** book accommodation early if you’re anywhere near Easter week. Lecce has grown significantly in popularity and the good places at reasonable prices disappear fast. A room that’s easy to find in March becomes a scramble in Holy Week.

Go. It’s a genuinely underrated city and April treats it well.
