Visiting Kos in October
Visiting Kos in October
# Kos in October: The Honest Version
October in Kos is genuinely a bit of a gamble, and whether that’s exciting or stressful depends entirely on what kind of traveller you are.
The weather can go either way. Early October often still feels like summer – temperatures hanging around the low-to-mid twenties, sea warm enough to swim in without any drama. But push into late October and you’re rolling the dice. Overcast days, the occasional proper rainstorm, and that particular melancholy that settles over a resort town winding down for winter. You might get glorious. You might get grey.
What you will definitely get is space. The peak season crowds have largely evaporated by October. Kardamena and Tigaki, which spend July and August absolutely rammed with package holiday groups, feel almost eerily quiet. That’s genuinely lovely if you want to actually walk around Kos Town, look at the castle without elbowing through tour groups, or sit at a harbour taverna without feeling processed. The old town becomes yours in a way it simply isn’t in summer.
The practical catch is that things close. Not everything, but enough to notice. Beach bars start shutting mid-month. Some restaurants and hotels close entirely after the first week or two. Water parks, boat trips and certain attractions start winding down or disappearing from the schedule altogether. You’ll still find places to eat and somewhere to stay, but the version of Kos you get in October is a skeleton of the summer one.
So who is it actually worth it for? Walkers, cyclists and history people will honestly love it – the heat becomes manageable, the ruins feel less like a chore, and the interior of the island is genuinely beautiful without the summer haze. Couples after a quiet retreat rather than a party. Anyone who’d rather read on a beach than share it with three hundred strangers.
If you need a guaranteed full resort experience, go in September instead.
**Practical tip:** Call or email your specific accommodation before booking and ask directly whether they’re open your whole trip. Don’t assume.
