Visiting Aegina in October
Visiting Aegina in October
# Aegina in October: The Honest Version
October on Aegina is genuinely one of those months where you roll the dice a little. The early part of the month can still feel properly summery – warm enough to swim, sunshine that actually means something – but by the last week or two you’re increasingly likely to hit grey days, the odd heavy shower, and that particular Mediterranean autumn feeling where everything suddenly smells of wet stone and woodsmoke. There’s no guarantee either way, which is either exciting or annoying depending on your personality.
What’s undeniable is that the crowds have thinned dramatically. The Athenian weekend exodus that clogs the ferry and fills every taverna table from June through September has largely stopped. You can actually walk around the Aphaia Temple without photobombing a hen party. The pistachio stalls are still very much open – it’s harvest season, so you’ll find fresh pistachios everywhere and locals who are genuinely happy to talk about them rather than just sell to you.
Most restaurants stay open through October, though some will start keeping odd hours or close mid-week. The beach clubs are done. A handful of smaller accommodation options shut down. The island shifts from holiday mode into something quieter and more like actual Greek island life, which for many people is precisely the point.
Is it worth it? For couples, solo travellers, or anyone who finds peak-season Greek islands slightly exhausting, yes, strongly. For families with young children banking on reliable beach days, it’s riskier and probably not the safest bet. If swimming is non-negotiable to your happiness, go early October or accept you might not.
The ferry from Piraeus runs regularly year-round, and the journey is only about an hour on the fast boat, so you could realistically do a day trip and not lose much if the weather disappoints.
**Practical tip:** Pack a light waterproof layer even if the forecast looks clear. October showers on Greek islands arrive fast, leave fast, and ruin lunch if you’re unprepared.
