# Olympos in February: Honest Thoughts

Look, February in Olympos is genuinely unpredictable, and you should go in knowing that. The Turkish Mediterranean coast can surprise you in both directions – some years you’ll get crisp, clear days with bright sunshine and temperatures sitting comfortably around 15°C, perfect for walking through the valley ruins without sweating through your clothes. Other years it’s grey, damp, and the kind of cold that seeps into old stone and doesn’t leave. Rainfall data for this stretch of coast is patchy, but rain is absolutely possible, sometimes for days at a stretch. Pack accordingly and don’t plan around perfect weather.

What you’ll actually find when you get there is a place that’s almost entirely shut down. Olympos in high season is backpacker central, with the famous treehouse camps running at full capacity and a fairly festive atmosphere along the valley. In February, most of those camps are closed, many of the restaurants along the road are shuttered, and the beach itself will likely be just you and whoever else wandered in. The ruins are free to enter in winter, which is a small but genuine bonus.

That emptiness is honestly the whole point of going in February. The ancient Lycian ruins sitting in the valley, the river threading through it, the overgrown tombs – all of it feels properly atmospheric without forty people taking photographs of the same doorway. If you’re someone who finds archaeology genuinely interesting and wants to move slowly through a place, this is your month.

It’s not worth it if you’re hoping for beach swimming, a social scene, or reliable facilities. You might struggle to find somewhere decent to eat nearby, so plan your accommodation and food logistics carefully beforehand.

The one practical tip: check whether your accommodation is actually open before you travel. Don’t assume. Call or email directly rather than relying on booking platforms, because listings sometimes stay active even when owners have closed for winter. Getting there only to find everything locked up is a very specific kind of miserable.
