Visiting Elba in March
Visiting Elba in March
# Elba in March: Honest Thoughts
Look, March on Elba is a bit of a gamble, and I’d rather tell you that upfront than let you book ferries expecting Sardinian sunshine.
The weather is genuinely unpredictable. You’re looking at maybe 12-15°C on a decent day, but the island sits in the Tyrrhenian Sea and takes hits from whatever the Mediterranean decides to throw around in late winter. Some days are absolutely stunning – that sharp, clear light that makes the granite coastline look almost theatrical. Other days you’ll be pulling on every layer you packed while horizontal rain comes in off the water. Rainfall is real and not insignificant. Don’t count on either outcome.
What you will get, unambiguously, is the island almost entirely to yourself. Elba in high summer is overrun – beaches sardined, restaurants heaving, the roads to Cavoli and Sant’Andrea basically stationary. In March, you can drive anywhere, park anywhere, and walk stretches of coastline without seeing another soul for an hour. That part is genuinely special.
The catch is that Portoferraio functions, the supermarkets are open, and you can eat and get around fine – but probably a third to half of restaurants, hotels, and beach bars are still shuttered waiting for Easter to flip the switch. The Napoleon museums at the Palazzina dei Mulini and Villa San Martino are typically open, which honestly gives you something solid to anchor a day around beyond just hoping the sun cooperates.
Is it worth it? For hikers, absolutely. The inland trails through Monte Capanne are dramatically less crowded and the vegetation is lush from winter rain. For anyone coming primarily to swim, read on a beach chair, and eat well every night – honestly, wait until May when the island has properly woken up but summer chaos hasn’t arrived.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation directly with smaller hotels rather than through platforms. Several places list themselves as closed online but will happily take you if you call. You’ll also get better prices and actual local advice on what’s actually open that week.
