# Menorca in May: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About Enough

May is quietly one of the best times to visit Menorca, and I’d argue most people are sleeping on it completely.

The weather sits at a genuinely pleasant 19.5°C on average, which sounds modest until you’re actually there. In practice that means warm enough to swim if you’re not a wimp about it, comfortable for walking the Camí de Cavalls coastal path without sweating through your clothes by 9am, and cool enough that long lunches outside feel like a pleasure rather than a heat-induced endurance test. You’ll get some rain — around 28mm across the month — which typically means a handful of grey afternoons rather than relentless drizzle. Pack a light layer and one decent waterproof and you’ll barely notice.

Crowds are genuinely manageable. The summer invasion that turns Ciutadella and the main beaches into a logistical nightmare hasn’t arrived yet. You can park. You can get a table at a restaurant without a reservation. You can stand on Cala Macarella and actually see the turquoise water rather than a wall of inflatable flamingos. This matters more than people realize until they visit in August and want to cry.

Most things are open by May, including the majority of restaurants, boat trips, and beach bars, though some smaller spots and rural hotels are still finding their feet after winter. Don’t expect everything to be firing on all cylinders in early May specifically — give it until mid-month and the island feels properly alive.

Is it worth it? Absolutely, and particularly for couples, hikers, food-focused travelers, or anyone who breaks out in a rash at the sight of a sunbed queue. Families with younger kids who aren’t die-hard beach-every-single-day visitors will love it too. If your entire trip depends on baking in 32-degree heat and the sea feeling like a bathtub, wait until July.

**Practical tip:** Book your car hire before you arrive. May is no longer the secret it once was, and rental availability disappears faster than you’d expect.
