# Alghero in July: What It’s Actually Like
Let’s be straight with you: July in Alghero is hot, busy, and absolutely worth it if you go in with the right expectations.
That 28°C average sounds manageable until you factor in that you’re walking on sun-baked Catalan-era limestone walls with zero shade and a gelato that gives you roughly ninety seconds before it becomes a wrist problem. The 5mm of rain across the whole month is basically nothing – you might see a brief evening rumble once, maybe twice, but you’re genuinely packing for a dry trip. Bring sunscreen you actually intend to use.
Crowds are real. Alghero punches above its weight for a Sardinian town of its size partly because it’s charming and partly because the airport sits practically next door, making it an easy Ryanair destination for half of northern Europe. The old town gets genuinely packed between 11am and 3pm. Restaurants fill up. The better beaches like Lazzaretto and Maria Pia get claimed early. None of this is unmanageable, but if you’re someone who finds crowds actively miserable, you’ll want August even less and should probably consider May instead.
Everything is open, which matters more than people realise. Every restaurant, bar, boat trip, and Neptune’s Grotto tour runs at full capacity. The evening passeggiata along the ramparts is genuinely lovely – locals reclaim the streets after 7pm when day-trippers thin out and the temperature drops enough to make wandering feel like a pleasure rather than an endurance test.
Who is July actually for? Families with school-age kids who have no schedule flexibility, people who want guaranteed sun and full infrastructure, and anyone who enjoys a lively atmosphere where the town feels properly alive. It’s also ideal if sea swimming is your priority – the water is warm and clear, and the snorkelling around Capo Caccia is exceptional.
**One practical tip:** Book Neptune’s Grotto boat trip for early morning. The cave itself stays cool, the light on the water is better, and you’ll beat the afternoon queues by about two hours.
