Visiting Roses in September

# Roses in September: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About

Look, September in Roses is genuinely one of the better-kept secrets on the Costa Brava, and I say that as someone who’s been there in peak July and wanted to cry at the beach parking situation.

**What it’s actually like**

The first half of September still feels very much like summer. Warm, often hot, the sea has had three months to heat up properly and swimming is genuinely excellent. By the second half, things shift noticeably. Evenings get that slight edge to them, you’ll want a layer after dinner, and you might catch a grey day or two. Rain is genuinely unpredictable – you could get two weeks of unbroken sunshine or a heavy thunderstorm that rolls in from nowhere and disappears just as fast. Pack a light rain jacket and stop worrying about it.

**Crowds**

This is the main reason to go. The absolute chaos of August is over. Spanish families largely head home after their summer holidays, the beach umbrellas thin out considerably, and you can actually get a table at a restaurant without that slightly desperate hovering energy. It’s not empty – Roses is still recognisably a resort town – but it breathes again.

**What’s open**

Most things, at least in early September. Restaurants, boat trips, water sports rentals, the main attractions. By late September some of the smaller chiringuitos and seasonal businesses start quietly closing up, so if there’s a specific place you want to eat, check before you make it the centerpiece of your Tuesday.

**Is it worth it, and for whom**

Absolutely worth it if you hate crowds, have any flexibility on dates, or just want to actually enjoy the place rather than survive it. Families with school-age kids obviously can’t do this, which is partly why it works so well for everyone else – couples, older travellers, people who just want to read a book on a beach without a volleyball situation developing nearby.

**One practical tip**

Book accommodation anyway. September has a loyal following of people who’ve figured out exactly what I just told you.
