# Girona in September: What You Actually Need to Know

September is genuinely one of the better times to visit Girona, and I’ll tell you why without overselling it.

The weather sits in that sweet spot where summer hasn’t quite let go. Expect warm days, often still hitting the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, sometimes pushing higher in early September. Evenings cool down enough to actually enjoy sitting outside without sweating through dinner, which is more than you can say for August. Rainfall is a wildcard. September is technically when Catalonia starts seeing more storms roll in, and when they come, they come hard and fast. You might get a full week of glorious sunshine or you might get caught in a dramatic downpour that empties out of nowhere. Pack a light rain jacket. Not optional.

Crowds thin out noticeably compared to July and August, which is a genuine relief in Girona’s old town. That Jewish Quarter and the cathedral area get properly suffocating in peak summer. By mid-September especially, you can actually walk the medieval walls without queuing behind a slow-moving group being guided in three languages simultaneously. Restaurants are easier to get into, the better ones included.

Everything is open. No shoulder-season casualty closures to worry about. The cathedral, the Arab Baths, the museums – all running normally. The city also hosts its literary festival, Temps de Flors has long passed by this point, so don’t confuse September with that May event.

Is it worth visiting in September? Yes, particularly if you prefer your medieval architecture without a crowd of elbows. It suits people who want to actually eat well and linger, anyone who finds August heat exhausting, and photographers who want those narrow streets without a hundred other cameras in shot.

**Practical tip:** Book your accommodation slightly earlier in September than you’d think necessary. The city draws visitors from Barcelona easily since it’s only 40 minutes by train, so weekend footfall remains higher than the month’s general reputation suggests. Weekday visits are noticeably quieter.
