The weather sits in that awkward in-between zone. Early October can still feel like a warm exhale of summer – pleasantly warm days around 20°C, golden light over the lake, the kind of afternoon that makes you want to sit outside a kafja and never leave. Then sometime mid-to-late month, autumn properly arrives. Rain becomes a real possibility, sometimes for days at a stretch. The Dinaric Alps that frame the city look genuinely dramatic under storm clouds, but your plans for hiking up to Rozafa Castle might get soggy. Pack layers and keep your expectations flexible.

The crowds? Gone. Almost completely. The summer backpacker trail has moved on, the organized tour groups have evaporated, and you’ll have Rozafa Castle largely to yourself. This is actually a significant upgrade to the experience. Shkoder in peak summer gets busier than people expect given its slightly off-the-beaten-path reputation, and October strips that away entirely.

What’s open is mostly fine. Restaurants, cafes, the city itself – all functioning normally. Shkoder isn’t a beach resort town that shuts down seasonally; it has its own rhythm as a working Albanian city. Is it worth it? For independent travelers who care more about atmosphere than guaranteed sunshine – yes, genuinely. The light is beautiful, locals have more time for you, and you can actually wander the old bazaar quarter without feeling rushed. For someone set on specific outdoor activities or who needs reliable weather to enjoy themselves, maybe reconsider or come earlier.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation even though it’s quiet. The handful of genuinely good guesthouses are small, and a few take breaks between seasons. A quick email saves an annoying arrival surprise.
