# Istanbul in November: The Honest Version

November is genuinely one of the better times to visit Istanbul, though not for the reasons a brochure would tell you.

The city quiets down considerably after the summer chaos. The Grand Bazaar still fills with tourists, but you can actually move through it without being shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers. Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace have manageable queues. The locals reclaim their city a little, which means the restaurants around Karaköy and Cihangir feel less performative and more real. That matters in Istanbul, where the genuine everyday atmosphere is half the point.

The weather is genuinely mixed. At 15°C it’s mild enough, but Istanbul in November has a particular dampness to it – that 55mm of rain doesn’t always fall in neat, predictable showers. Some days you’ll get grey skies and persistent drizzle that makes the Bosphorus look moody and cinematic. Other days are crisp and clear, and the light on the water is extraordinary. Pack layers and a proper waterproof jacket, not an umbrella – the wind off the strait makes umbrellas more enemy than ally.

Everything is open. This isn’t a place that closes down seasonally. The mosques, museums, hammams, restaurants, ferry routes – all running normally. Hammams are actually perfect in November; stepping into the heat after a damp afternoon wandering Sultanahmet feels earned in a way it never does in August.

Is it worth visiting? Yes, genuinely, especially if you’re someone who cares more about atmosphere than beach weather. Solo travellers, couples, food-focused visitors, history obsessives – November works well for all of them. Families with young kids might find the greyness wears on everyone, but it’s far from a dealbreaker.

**One practical tip:** Book your Bosphorus ferry cruise carefully. The cheap tourist cruises can feel bleak in bad weather on an open deck. Instead, take the regular public ferry from Eminönü to Kadıköy – it costs almost nothing, takes about 25 minutes, and puts you among commuters rather than tour groups. The view is identical.
