# Sliema in February: What It’s Actually Like

Look, February in Sliema is genuinely unpredictable, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. The Mediterranean climate sounds romantic until you’re standing on the Strand in a horizontal wind wondering where your lunch has gone. Temperatures typically hover around 12-16°C, but that sea-facing promenade strips about five degrees off however warm the sun feels. Pack a proper jacket. Not a light cardigan. A jacket.

Rainfall is the wildcard. Some February weeks are gloriously clear, with that sharp winter light bouncing off the water that photographers actually love. Other weeks deliver persistent grey drizzle that makes the apartment blocks look considerably less charming. You’re rolling the dice, basically.

What February does deliver, almost without exception, is quiet. The seafront is genuinely yours. The cafes along Tower Road have space, actual tables, no competition. You can walk the promenade from end to end without navigating stag groups or cruise ship crowds. Locals reclaim the place in winter and there’s something real about Sliema in February that the packed summer version simply doesn’t offer.

Most restaurants stay open year-round since Maltese people actually eat out regardless of season. The ferry to Valletta runs normally. Shops operate standard hours. This isn’t a town that shuts down and sulks through winter. You won’t struggle to find food, coffee, or company.

Is it worth it? Depends entirely on you. If you need beach weather and evening walks in a sundress, genuinely, no. Come in May instead. But if you want affordable accommodation, easy exploration of Valletta and the Three Cities without queuing, and a slower pace that lets you actually think rather than just photograph things, February is quietly excellent. Photographers, history enthusiasts, and people recovering from burnout tend to do particularly well here.

**One practical tip:** bring layers you can actually combine, not just one heavy coat. You’ll start mornings cold, potentially strip down by noon if the sun appears, then need everything again by 4pm. February here dresses in three seasons daily.
