Ankaran is a small coastal settlement near Koper in southwestern Slovenia, sitting on a narrow peninsula that juts into the Bay of Trieste. It’s genuinely off the tourist radar compared to Piran or Portorož, which makes it ideal for travelers who want the Adriatic without the summer crowds and inflated prices.

The best area to base yourself is right along the seafront near the main beach and the former holiday resort complex. This puts you within walking distance of the water, the handful of local restaurants, and the pine forest paths that make Ankaran genuinely pleasant. The resort area, originally built during the Yugoslav era, now operates as a campsite and accommodation complex that offers some of the most affordable coastal sleeping options in the entire country. The campsite here is well-maintained, shaded by mature trees, and sits almost directly on the beach, making it exceptional value for Slovenia’s Adriatic coast.

For budget travelers, the campsite and basic bungalows within the resort complex are the obvious starting point. Prices here significantly undercut anything in Portorož, and the facilities are decent without being luxurious. Private rooms in the village itself occasionally appear on booking platforms and tend to be affordable, though supply is limited. Arriving without a reservation in July or August is genuinely risky given how small the accommodation pool is.

Avoid booking somewhere in Koper expecting to easily access Ankaran without a car. The bus connection exists but runs infrequently, and the ride feels longer than the short distance suggests. If you don’t have transport, staying within Ankaran’s compact core is essential.

One booking mistake people consistently make is assuming that budget accommodation here equals poor location. It doesn’t. The cheapest options in Ankaran often have better beach access than mid-range hotels elsewhere on the coast simply because the whole settlement is compact and purpose-built around the waterfront.

Ankaran rewards slow travelers who research in advance, book early for summer, and arrive with modest expectations. What they find usually exceeds those expectations considerably.
