Visiting Nerja in May
# Nerja in May: What It’s Actually Like
May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Nerja, though not quite for the reasons the travel sites will tell you.
The weather is where things get interesting. You’re looking at something in the mid-to-upper twenties most days, warm enough to actually enjoy the beach without the brutal heat that turns July and August into an endurance test. That said, May in southern Spain isn’t a guaranteed sunshine machine. You can absolutely get overcast days, and early May especially carries a real chance of rain. Not monsoon-level drama, but enough to disrupt plans if you’ve built your whole trip around lying on Burriana Beach. Pack a layer and keep one day flexible.
The crowds are the real reason to consider May. Nerja in August is a different town entirely — packed, expensive, loud, and stripped of any charm the moment you try to get a table anywhere decent. May sits in this sweet spot where the infrastructure is fully running — restaurants open, boat trips going, the caves have normal visiting hours — but you’re not fighting thirty thousand other tourists for a sunlounger. The Balcón de Europa actually looks like a balcony rather than a human traffic jam.
Burriana Beach gets lively on weekends, particularly as May progresses toward the bank holidays, but weekdays are genuinely relaxed. The Nerja Caves are open and worth your time, though go early in the morning before any coach parties show up.
Who’s it best for? Couples, anyone over thirty-five who values atmosphere over scene, and people who actually want to eat lunch at a beachside chiringuito rather than queue for one. It’s not ideal if your holiday depends entirely on guaranteed baking sun every single day — for that certainty, come in July and accept the tradeoffs.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation early anyway. May has become increasingly popular precisely because everyone figured out the August problem, and the good apartments in the old town disappear faster than you’d expect for a shoulder month.
