Visiting Nerja in September

# Nerja in September: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About

September is honestly one of the better times to visit Nerja, and I say that as someone who’s been there in the sweaty chaos of August and wished I’d waited a month.

**What the weather’s actually like**

Early September still feels very much like summer – we’re talking highs around 27-30°C, strong sunshine, and sea temperatures that have been building warmth all summer and are genuinely perfect for swimming. The further into the month you go, the more you might catch a brief afternoon thunderstorm, particularly in the final week or two. It’s not guaranteed and it rarely lasts long, but the odd dramatic downpour is possible. Pack a light layer for evenings, which start getting noticeably cooler once the sun drops.

**The crowd situation**

This is the real reason to consider September. The Spanish and European school holidays end in early September, and you can almost feel the town exhale. The Balcón de Europa goes from shoulder-to-shoulder madness to actually enjoyable. The beaches – especially Burriana – are busy but not unbearable. You’ll get a sunlounger without a 7am towel-placement war.

**What’s open**

Everything. This is peak-adjacent season, so restaurants, bars, boat trips, the Nerja Caves – all operating fully. You won’t arrive to find half the town shuttered, which can be a real problem if you visit in, say, November.

**Is it worth it and for whom**

Absolutely worth it for couples, adults, and anyone who wants a proper beach holiday without feeling like cattle. Families with school-age kids obviously can’t easily do this, but if you have flexibility, September delivers almost everything August offers at a noticeably calmer, slightly cheaper pace.

**One practical tip**

Book your visit to the Nerja Caves in advance regardless of when you go – they sell out faster than you’d expect and the queues for walk-ups can genuinely eat a couple of hours of your day. Do it before you leave home and thank yourself later.
