Visiting Nerja in October

Visiting Nerja in October

# Nerja in October: The Honest Version

October is genuinely one of the better times to visit Nerja, but let me be straight with you about why that comes with some caveats.

The weather is warm but unpredictable. You’re likely looking at temperatures somewhere in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, which is comfortable for wandering around without melting. However, October is when the Mediterranean coast starts seeing proper rainfall, and Nerja is no exception. You might get ten glorious days of sunshine, or you might hit a week where it rains solidly for three days straight. That’s not me being pessimistic, that’s just how the shoulder season works on this stretch of the Axarquía coast. Pack a light layer and one outfit you don’t mind getting soaked.

The crowds situation is genuinely good news. The bulk of summer tourists have gone home, which means the Balcón de Europa stops feeling like a slow-moving queue and becomes the pleasant viewpoint it’s supposed to be. The beaches, particularly Burriana, are quieter during the week. You can actually get a table at a restaurant without planning your entire day around it.

In terms of what’s open, most things are still running in early October. By the last week or two, some smaller beach bars and seasonal places start closing or reducing hours. The Nerja Caves are open year-round and honestly worth doing whenever you visit.

Is it worth visiting? For families with school-age kids, probably not ideal since term has started. For couples, solo travellers, or anyone who finds peak season Nerja too hectic and overpriced, absolutely yes. The town feels more like itself in October, more Spanish, less resort.

One practical tip: book accommodation early anyway. Nerja is small, and the decent places fill up even in shoulder season, particularly on weekends when people drive up from Málaga city for a break. Don’t assume quiet season means you can decide last minute.

Go in early October if you can. Better odds on the weather and more places still open.
