# Torrevieja in February: The Honest Version

Look, February in Torrevieja is a bit of a gamble, and anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to sell you an apartment.

The weather is genuinely unpredictable. You might get glorious sunny days pushing 18°C where you’re sitting outside in a light jacket feeling pretty smug about escaping northern Europe. Or you might get grey, drizzly weeks where the sea looks the colour of old dishwater and the wind cuts straight through you. Rainfall is erratic rather than constant, but it happens. Pack layers and bring waterproofs you’ll actually use.

What’s it actually like? Quiet. Noticeably, almost eerily quiet compared to summer. Torrevieja has a substantial permanent population, including a large expat community, so it’s not a ghost town. The local markets, supermarkets, and plenty of bars and restaurants stay open. But the touristy seafront places? Many are shuttered until Easter. The salt lakes are still beautiful and absolutely worth seeing – they don’t close for winter, and you’ll often have the paths practically to yourself.

The crowds, or lack of them, are honestly one of the better arguments for going. Parking is easy, the promenade is peaceful, and locals actually outnumber tourists. If you want to get a feel for what the place is really like rather than its busiest, loudest summer version, February delivers that.

Is it worth visiting? Depends entirely on who you are. Retired couples, remote workers, people who like walking and eating well without fighting for a table – yes, genuinely. Families with kids expecting beach holidays or people who need sunshine to function – probably wait until May at the earliest.

The pink salt lakes are the real draw year-round, and flamingos are often more visible in winter months than summer, which is a pleasant surprise most people don’t know about.

**Practical tip:** Check the weekly Tuesday and Friday markets are running before you go. Hours and stall numbers are reduced in winter, and showing up expecting the full summer version will disappoint you.
