# Zadar in May: Worth It, With a Few Caveats
May in Zadar sits in that sweet spot before the Adriatic coast loses its mind to summer tourism. The temperature hovers around 21°C, which sounds perfect on paper, and honestly it mostly is. You’ll get genuinely warm afternoons where sitting at a waterfront café in a light jacket feels exactly right. But that 100mm of rainfall is real, and you should take it seriously. May is actually one of Zadar’s wetter months, and while showers tend to be sharp and fast rather than all-day miserable, you will absolutely get caught out at least once. Pack accordingly and don’t plan anything where soggy shoes would ruin your day.
Crowds are manageable but growing. Early May feels calm in the best way – locals outnumber tourists, restaurants aren’t rushed, and you can actually hear the Sea Organ doing its thing without someone’s selfie stick in your peripheral vision. By late May, Croatian school groups and early European holidaymakers start arriving and you’ll notice the shift. It’s still nowhere near July madness, but it’s not a secret anymore either.
Practically everything is open. Museums, the Forum, the old town walls, boat trips to the islands – the season is running. Some beach bars and full summer operations haven’t kicked in yet, which is either a downside or a relief depending on your personality. The water is around 17-18°C, which most people find too cold to actually swim in, though you’ll always spot someone proving a point.
Is it worth going? Yes, especially if you’re combining it with split days to Plitvice or the islands, or if peak summer heat genuinely puts you off. It suits older travellers, couples, and anyone who finds August tourism exhausting. Solo travellers will find the relaxed pace easy to navigate.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation in the old town itself rather than the mainland side. In shoulder season, prices are reasonable enough that you can actually afford it, and not being separated from the old peninsula by a bridge changes the whole experience.
