Visiting Rethymno in May
# Rethymno in May: What It’s Actually Like
May is one of those months where Rethymno starts remembering it’s a tourist town again, but hasn’t quite committed to it yet. That transitional energy is either exactly what you want or mildly frustrating, depending on what you’re after.
**The weather is genuinely good, with caveats.** Early May can still throw cool evenings and the occasional rainy day at you – Crete in spring isn’t the guaranteed sunshine machine of July. You’re looking at temperatures somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties most days, which is honestly perfect for wandering the old town without dissolving. Pack a light layer. Don’t assume.
**Crowds are manageable but building.** The Venetian harbour, the lighthouse, the narrow streets around the old town – you can actually photograph them without strangers’ elbows in the frame. By late May that window is closing fast as European half-terms kick in and the summer machine starts properly turning. If you want the authentic cafe-sitting-by-the-harbour experience without queuing or paying peak prices, early May is genuinely one of the better times.
**What’s open is mostly everything.** Some smaller tavernas and beach clubs are still finding their rhythm, and a few places won’t be at full staffing yet. The Fortezza is open, the Archaeological Museum is open, the beach is there even if it’s not swimming weather for everyone. Water temperatures hover around 19-20 degrees – hardy northern Europeans will swim, sensible people will paddle.
**Is it worth it?** If you want relaxed exploration, good food without tourist-menu pressure, and accommodation at reasonable prices, yes, genuinely. If you want a packed beach holiday with everything firing on all cylinders, wait until June.
It suits history lovers, walkers, couples, and anyone who finds peak summer Crete overwhelming.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation but don’t over-plan restaurants. In May you can mostly walk into places, and some of the best meals happen when a local simply waves you into somewhere you’d never have found otherwise. Leave room for that.
