Visiting Rethymno in July

# Rethymno in July: What It’s Actually Like

Let’s be straight with you: July in Rethymno is hot. Genuinely, properly hot. You’re looking at temperatures regularly hitting 30-35°C, sometimes creeping beyond that, with the kind of dry heat that makes midday feel like standing next to an open oven. Rainfall is essentially nonexistent – this is one of the driest months on the Cretan calendar, so pack accordingly and don’t bring an umbrella expecting to need it.

The old town is beautiful, and it remains beautiful in July, but you’ll be sharing it with what feels like half of Europe. The Venetian harbour fills up fast, the narrow streets get genuinely congested by late morning, and the better-known tavernas will have you waiting or need booking ahead. This isn’t a hidden secret month. Families, couples, groups – everyone arrives in July because the sea is warm, the sky is reliably clear, and school’s out.

That said, everything is open. Every restaurant, boat trip, beach bar, rental shop, museum – the whole infrastructure of the town is fully switched on. The fortress stays open, the beach at Rethymno stretches long enough that you can usually find a spot if you walk a bit further from the main access points, and evening life genuinely comes alive in a way that shoulder season simply doesn’t match. Restaurants don’t close at nine. Bars run late. The town has an energy that’s real, not manufactured.

Worth visiting? If you like warmth, lively evenings, and having everything available, yes. If you’re someone who prioritises quiet exploration, meaningful conversation with locals, and manageable temperatures for walking – honestly, May or October will suit you better.

July belongs to people who don’t mind heat, enjoy being around other holidaymakers, and want that classic Greek summer experience with the infrastructure to support it.

**Practical tip:** Do anything that involves being outside and walking before 10am or after 6pm. Between those hours, treat the beach or your accommodation as your base. Fighting the midday heat in the old town isn’t a battle worth having.
