Visiting Elounda in April

# Elounda in April: What It’s Actually Like

April in Elounda is genuinely one of those months where you’re rolling the dice a little, and I think it’s worth being honest about that upfront.

The weather is transitional in the truest sense. You’ll get days that feel almost summery – warm sunshine, maybe 18 or 19 degrees, the kind of light that makes the Gulf of Mirabello look almost offensively beautiful. Then you’ll get days that are grey, breezy, and remind you this is still the Mediterranean in early spring. Rainfall is unpredictable. It probably won’t rain every day, but a shower or two across a week-long trip is entirely realistic. Pack a light waterproof and don’t plan everything around beach days.

The crowds situation is honestly the biggest selling point. April sits just before the Easter rush really kicks in and well before the summer hordes, so you’ll find the village feeling genuinely quiet. The waterfront tavernas aren’t heaving, you can actually walk around Spinalonga island without feeling like you’re queuing for a theme park ride, and the staff at restaurants have time to actually talk to you.

What’s open is the main practical consideration. The big luxury hotels around Elounda start reopening through April, but some don’t fully fire up until May. Smaller tavernas and local places tend to be more reliably open than you’d expect, but check before you go if you have somewhere specific in mind. Spinalonga itself is accessible throughout April.

**Is it worth it?** For certain people, absolutely yes. If you want the scenery without the crowds, if you’re a hiker or a history person, if you genuinely enjoy having a village feel quiet around you – April is excellent. If your whole holiday hinges on beach swimming and reliable sunshine, you might find it frustrating.

**One practical tip:** Rent a car. April is ideal for driving around eastern Crete when the roads aren’t yet clogged with tourist traffic, and the countryside is green and genuinely stunning right now.
