Where to Stay in Marrakech
Where to Stay in Marrakech
Marrakech is one of those cities where your accommodation choice genuinely makes or breaks the trip, and with crowds hitting peak levels, getting this right matters more than ever.
The medina is where most visitors want to stay, and for good reason. Being inside the old walled city puts you walking distance from the souks, Djemaa el-Fna square, and the majority of historic sites. For mid-range travelers, the sweet spot is a riad, one of those traditional courtyard houses converted into small guesthouses. You can find solid mid-range riads for roughly 60 to 120 euros per night, and they deliver an atmosphere that no modern hotel can replicate. Look for properties in the northern medina around Mouassine or Bab Doukkala, which are atmospheric but slightly less chaotic than the areas immediately surrounding the main square.
Gueliz, the French-built new city to the west, is a genuinely underrated option. It feels calmer, has better restaurants, easier taxi access, and modern amenities without sacrificing too much character. For mid-range budgets, you often get more space and reliable air conditioning here compared to similarly priced medina options. The tradeoff is a 15 to 20 minute walk or short taxi ride to the major sights.
Avoid staying directly on or adjacent to Djemaa el-Fna if you value sleep. The noise carries well past midnight every single night, and the aggressive tourist activity outside your door gets exhausting fast.
Budget travelers can find decent riads if they book well in advance and read recent reviews carefully, since quality fluctuates wildly at lower price points. Higher budget travelers should look at riads with private pools in the Mellah or southern medina for genuine seclusion.
The single booking mistake people consistently make is reserving a riad without checking its exact location on a map. Addresses in the medina are notoriously vague, and some properties sit down alleys that take 20 confusing minutes to navigate with luggage. Request detailed arrival instructions and ideally a WhatsApp contact before you leave home. Many travelers arrive stressed and sweaty because they skipped this step entirely.
