Visiting Petra in November
# Petra in November: What You’re Actually Getting Into
November is an interesting time to show up at Petra, and honestly, it’s one of those months where the answer to “should I go?” depends entirely on who you are.
The weather sits in genuinely pleasant territory for most of the month. Days are warm rather than hot, somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, which means you can actually walk the Siq and climb to the High Place of Sacrifice without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked. Evenings drop off sharply though, so if you’re staying nearby and planning any sunset wandering around the site, bring a proper layer. Rainfall is a wildcard. November marks the beginning of Jordan’s wet season, and while it’s not monsoon territory, you can absolutely get rained on. The bigger concern is flash flooding. The Siq and the canyon systems around Petra funnel water fast, and if there’s been rain anywhere in the region, authorities can close the site quickly. This isn’t paranoia, it’s killed people. Check conditions before you head in each morning.
Crowds are dramatically thinner than spring, which is peak season. You will still see tour groups, particularly midmorning, but the Treasury photograph without thirty strangers in the frame is genuinely achievable if you time it right. Early morning, first entry, gets you close to that.
Everything is open. The main trail, the Monastery hike, Petra by Night if they’re running it, the visitor centre. The site doesn’t scale back in November, so you’re not missing anything operationally.
Is it worth it? If you’re comfortable with the rain gamble and you care more about comfortable temperatures and thinner crowds than guaranteed blue skies, yes, it’s a strong choice. Anxious travellers who’ve saved this trip for years and need perfect conditions might prefer April. Experienced travellers who adapt easily will probably love it.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation with a flexible cancellation policy. If the site floods and closes for a day, you want the option to extend without financial pain.
