Here’s the slightly awkward truth about Tenerife in May: the weather is genuinely variable in a way that surprises people. You’re not guaranteed scorching sunshine. The south of the island — Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos — will likely be warm and mostly sunny, hovering around 22-24°C. But the north, including Puerto de la Cruz, can be cloudy and cooler, and if you’re heading up to Mount Teide, pack something genuinely warm because it’s cold up there regardless of the month.

Rainfall is patchy. May is transitioning out of the wetter season, so you might get a few grey days, particularly in the north and at altitude. It’s not monsoon territory, but don’t pack exclusively shorts and sandals based on blind optimism.

The crowd situation is actually one of May’s genuine selling points. You’re sitting in a sweet spot between Easter (which can be absolutely rammed) and the summer school holiday surge that hits in July and August. The beaches are manageable, restaurants aren’t turning people away, and you can get a sunbed without setting an alarm. It’s noticeably calmer and more pleasant to actually move around in.

Everything is open. This isn’t shoulder season in the sense of things being closed or half-hearted. Water parks, boat trips, hiking trails, the cable car up Teide — all running normally.

**Who is it actually good for?** Hikers and people who want to explore the island properly will love it. Families get good value without the chaos. If your entire holiday depends on guaranteed beach-roasting heat every single day, you might be taking a small gamble, particularly if you’re basing yourself in the north.

**One practical tip:** Book the Teide cable car in advance online. It sounds obvious but people consistently don’t bother and then turn up to find it sold out or closed due to wind. Wind closures are common up there and genuinely can’t be predicted, so build flexibility into that particular plan.

Worth it? Mostly yes. Just go in with honest expectations.
