# Gran Canaria in June: What It’s Actually Like
June sits in that interesting middle ground on Gran Canaria where it’s genuinely hard to predict what you’ll get, and that’s worth knowing before you book.
The weather is where things get interesting. The island can experience what locals call “the cloud season” in early summer, particularly in the north and at higher elevations. You might arrive expecting Mediterranean sunshine and find a stubborn grey lid sitting over Las Palmas or the mountainous interior for days at a time. The south – Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés – tends to behave better, but even there you can get overcast mornings that sometimes never quite clear. Temperatures are pleasant rather than scorching, typically mid-20s Celsius, so you’re unlikely to suffer. Rainfall is genuinely low, but “not much rain” and “wall-to-wall sunshine” aren’t the same thing.
Crowds are noticeably lighter than July and August, which is honestly one of the better arguments for going in June. The beaches aren’t packed, restaurants have space, and you won’t queue for the dunes at Maspalomas. Everything is open – it’s not a shoulder season in terms of closures. Water parks, boat trips, restaurants, the lot. School holidays haven’t kicked in yet for most of Europe, so the family crowd is thinner too.
Is it worth visiting? Depends entirely on what you want. If you’re chasing guaranteed baking sunshine for a proper beach holiday, June carries more risk than August and you should probably know that going in. If you want a relaxed trip, decent temperatures for walking the interior or cycling, and don’t mind a cloudy day here and there, it’s genuinely a lovely time to go. Older travellers and those who find peak summer heat punishing often love June here for exactly that reason.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation in the south of the island rather than the north or the capital if reliable sun is your priority. The microclimate difference between Maspalomas and Las Palmas in June can genuinely feel like two different islands.
