# Ajaccio in January: The Real Picture

Let me be straight with you: January in Ajaccio is not the Corsica of your daydreams. It’s mild by northern European standards, sure, but 12 degrees and over 110mm of rain means you’re spending meaningful chunks of your trip sheltering in cafés watching water sheet down the windows. That’s not necessarily a dealbreaker, but go in with your eyes open.

The upside? The town actually belongs to the locals again. Napoleon’s birthplace, the citadel, the Fesch Museum with its genuinely impressive Italian art collection – you can wander through all of it without elbowing past a single tour group. Restaurants are quieter, staff have time to actually talk to you, and you’ll get a much more honest sense of what Corsican life looks and sounds like when it isn’t performing for summer visitors.

The practical reality is that things close. Not everything, but enough to matter. Some restaurants and smaller hotels shut completely for January, so checking ahead isn’t optional – it’s essential. The market on Place du Marché still runs and is worth getting up early for. The seafront promenade on a dry, bright January morning – and you will get some of those – is quietly beautiful, with the mountains still snow-capped behind the town.

The beach situation is basically irrelevant. The water is cold, and nobody sensible is swimming.

**Is it worth going?** For city-break types who like museums, food, walking and atmosphere without crowds, genuinely yes. For anyone whose holiday happiness depends on guaranteed sunshine and outdoor time, probably wait until April or May when the weather improves dramatically but crowds haven’t fully arrived yet.

**One practical tip:** Pack layers you can actually trust, and bring a compact umbrella rather than a full rain jacket you’ll wrestle with. The showers tend to come and go quickly rather than lasting all day, so you’ll be putting that umbrella up and down constantly rather than committing to full wet-weather gear for hours at a stretch.
