Visiting Madeira in May
# Madeira in May: What It’s Actually Like
Here’s the honest truth about Madeira in May: it’s genuinely lovely, but not in a guaranteed Mediterranean postcard way. The island sits in the Atlantic, and the weather does whatever it wants regardless of the calendar. You could get warm sunshine and blue skies for a week straight, or you could get low cloud sitting stubbornly over the mountains while the north coast gets drenched. Usually you get both, sometimes on the same afternoon.
Temperatures are comfortable rather than hot – think mid-twenties on a good day, cooler up in the highlands around Pico do Arieiro where you’ll likely need a jacket regardless. The south coast around Funchal tends to behave itself better than the north. Pack layers. Seriously, pack layers and a light waterproof and stop stressing about it.
What May actually gets right is the flowers. The island is absolutely exploding with colour – agapanthus, hydrangeas, bird of paradise everywhere you look. The famous Madeira Flower Festival typically falls in late April or early May, which brings crowds into Funchal for a weekend but also brings genuine atmosphere. Outside of that window, the island feels refreshingly underpressured. It’s past the Easter rush, not yet at peak summer volume. You can walk the levadas without feeling like you’re in a hiking traffic jam, get a table at good restaurants without booking three days ahead, and actually enjoy the Monte toboggan without queueing for half your holiday.
Everything is open. May is well within the main tourist season so you won’t find museums closed or ferry services reduced. The whale watching boats are running, the cable cars are operating, the market in Funchal is doing its thing daily.
Who is this month really for? Hikers, nature people, anyone who wants atmosphere without intensity, and couples who don’t need guaranteed beach weather to be happy. If you’re coming purely to bake by a pool, Madeira is never really your island anyway.
**Practical tip:** Book your levada walks in advance if you want a guide, particularly Levada do Caldeirão Verde. They fill up faster than you’d expect in May.
