The seafront promenade, the Šetalište, is genuinely lovely in a lived-in way, lined with café tables where you’ll sit beside elderly Brits and Germans who arrived for two weeks three years ago. The old town is compact and walkable, anchored by Kanli Kula, a brooding Ottoman fortress that hosts summer concerts and offers views across the entire bay entrance that justify the climb entirely on their own. This is the exact point where the Adriatic becomes the Bay of Kotor, and on a clear morning that geography feels almost theatrical.

May, June, September, and October are the correct months. July and August bring heat and traffic without bringing much else. February brings the Mimosa Festival, when the town celebrates early flowering trees with parades and general cheerfulness that feels genuinely local rather than performed for cameras.

Stay in or near the old town for atmosphere, or find accommodation along the lower promenade if you want the water immediately outside your door. Avoid the main road running through town – it’s loud and graceless and has nothing to offer you.

What tourists consistently miss is the network of footpaths climbing into the hills above town toward the monastery of Savina. It takes forty minutes, it’s quiet on weekdays, and it gives you a completely different understanding of how the town is actually structured across its terraces.
