May in Sarajevo is classic Balkan spring, which means genuinely lovely days — temperatures usually sitting somewhere between 15 and 22 degrees Celsius — punctuated by rain that arrives with zero warning and zero apology. The city sits in a valley surrounded by mountains, which creates its own moody microclimate. Pack a light jacket you can actually stuff in a bag. Don’t bother with an umbrella; just accept that you might get briefly drenched and that the wet streets actually make the old town look incredible.

**The crowd situation** is where May really earns its reputation. You’re ahead of the summer wave, which means the cable car up to Trebević has queues you can actually tolerate, the war history sites — the Tunnel of Hope, the Srebrenica memorial — get the quiet and space they deserve, and you can sit at a café in the old bazaar without fighting for a table. It’s not empty, but it’s manageable.

**What’s open** is essentially everything. Restaurants, the Yellow Fortress at dusk, day trip options to Mostar. The mountain skiing at Bjelašnica is likely finished, but hiking trails are waking up and the surrounding landscape goes properly green.

**Who is this for?** Honestly, most people. History travelers, first-timers, anyone wanting meaningful rather than party tourism. It’s less ideal if you need guaranteed sunshine for a beach mindset — this is a city trip, and it rewards curiosity more than good weather anyway.

**One practical tip:** Book your accommodation early. Sarajevo’s quality guesthouses in the old town are small and fill up faster than you’d expect for a city that still flies under the radar. Don’t assume you can sort it last minute.
