Alanya sits on a rocky promontory jutting into the Mediterranean like a fist, and it earns its place on any Turkish itinerary for one simple reason: it delivers exactly what it promises. That promise, however, depends entirely on knowing what you’re walking into.

The castle is the real draw, a 13th-century Seljuk fortress that crowns the headland and rewards the sweaty climb with genuinely staggering views across the coastline. Go early, before the tour buses, and you’ll have the battlements largely to yourself. The Red Tower down at the harbour is photogenic and well-preserved, but it’s the castle that justifies the effort. Cleopatra Beach stretches west of the headland with fine sand and clear water, though between July and August you’re sharing it with approximately half of Germany and Scandinavia. The beach is genuinely good. Manage your expectations about solitude.

Here’s the honest version: Alanya’s main hotel belt is aggressively all-inclusive. Enormous resort complexes line the coast east of the centre, filled with package tourists who rarely leave the compound. That’s not a criticism of those tourists, but it does mean parts of town feel more like a theme park than a destination. The centre itself, particularly around the harbour and the streets climbing toward the castle, retains some genuine character. Eat there, not inside your hotel.

The best area to base yourself is the old town below the castle walls. It’s quieter, more atmospheric, and within walking distance of both the harbour and Cleopatra Beach without being buried in the resort strip. May, June, September and October are the months that make this place sing: warm enough for swimming, cool enough for walking, and stripped of the peak-summer crush that turns the promenade into a slow-moving queue.

The thing most tourists miss entirely is Damlataş Cave, a stalactite cavern five minutes from Cleopatra Beach that’s historically used as a therapeutic space for respiratory conditions. It’s genuinely atmospheric and almost always quiet because everyone else is poolside. Worth thirty minutes of anyone’s afternoon.

Alanya suits couples and families seeking reliable sun, clear water, and uncomplicated Mediterranean pleasure. It suits budget travellers willing to step outside the all-inclusive bubble. It does not suit people looking for undiscovered Turkey or cultural immersion beyond a single good afternoon at the castle. Know which category you’re in and you’ll have a very good time.
