# Alanya, Turkey: Worth It or Skip It?
Let me be straight with you. Alanya is not a hidden gem. It stopped being that roughly thirty years ago. What it is, however, is one of the most honest holiday destinations on the Mediterranean coast, and there’s something quietly refreshing about a place that knows exactly what it is and commits to it completely.
**The good stuff first.** Alanya Castle genuinely earns your legs. The climb is brutal in July heat, but the Seljuk fortress sitting 250 metres above the sea delivers views that will make you forget you’re sweating through your shirt. It’s legitimate history surrounded by a town that mostly ignores it, which somehow makes it feel more real rather than less. The Red Tower down at the harbour is compact but photogenic, and the surrounding harbour area is one of the nicer spots to sit with a cold Efes and watch boat traffic without anyone aggressively trying to sell you something. Cleopatra Beach is genuinely beautiful water – clear, warm, the colour people put on screensavers. Damlataş cave is a pleasant thirty-minute curiosity, especially welcome on a punishing afternoon when you just need somewhere cool and dark.
**Now the honest part.** The main strip is relentless. Bars stacked against bars, Irish pubs next to German beer halls, all-inclusive wristband wearers shuffling between buffets that taste broadly the same regardless of which hotel they belong to. The all-inclusive belt is budget for a reason, and budget here means functional rather than charming. Expect crowds that make Cleopatra Beach feel like a car park by 11am in peak season. The aggressive selling around the bazaar area gets exhausting by day two. And genuine Turkish culture requires effort to find – it exists, but it’s competing hard against a tourism infrastructure that has little interest in showing it to you.
**The verdict.** Alanya works brilliantly if you go in knowing what you’re buying – sunshine, cheap drinks, warm water, a couple of genuinely good historical sites for when you need cultural cover for the family photos. It works terribly if you arrive expecting authenticity or tranquility.
Come in May or October, ignore the strip at least twice a week, walk up to that castle, and you’ll have a perfectly solid holiday for very little money.
That’s really all it promises. It delivers.
