# Tavira in September: The Sweet Spot You’ve Been Looking For

Honestly, if someone asked me the best time to visit Tavira, September would be my answer without much hesitation.

The heat that makes August feel like you’re being slowly cooked has finally backed off. Twenty-five degrees is genuinely pleasant rather than punishing – you can actually walk around the old town in the middle of the day without immediately needing to lie down somewhere dark. There’s maybe 20mm of rain across the whole month, so you’re not carrying an umbrella, but occasionally you’ll get a brief shower that cools everything down and makes the terracotta and whitewashed buildings look almost ridiculously photogenic afterwards.

The crowds thin out noticeably after the first week. Portuguese school holidays end in mid-September, and a lot of the northern European families who dominate August start disappearing. You’ll still see tourists – Tavira is well and truly on the map now – but you can actually get a table at Restaurante Bica without planning your entire day around it, which feels like a genuine luxury.

Everything is still open, which matters more than people realise. Some smaller Algarve towns start pulling the shutters down by late September, but Tavira has enough year-round life that the boat trips to Ilha de Tavira are still running, the fish restaurants are fully operational, and the market feels alive rather than abandoned. The sea is still warm – probably around 24 degrees – because the Atlantic holds its summer heat well into autumn.

It suits people who like their travel relaxed rather than performative. Retired couples, solo travellers, anyone who actually wants to read a book by the water rather than defend their patch of sand from neighbouring towels. It’s less ideal if your holiday depends on a buzzing nightlife scene, because September Tavira is quiet evenings and good wine rather than anything hectic.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation on the eastern, quieter side of the river if you can. It’s a two-minute walk from everything, noticeably cheaper, and you’ll sleep better.
