Visiting Byblos in March
# Byblos in March: What to Actually Expect
March in Byblos is genuinely unpredictable, and that’s not me hedging — it’s just Lebanon in early spring. You could get three days of warm sunshine where you’re sitting at a harbour restaurant in a light jacket thinking you’ve timed this perfectly, then wake up to grey skies and real rain that makes the ancient ruins feel more like a punishment than a highlight. Pack layers and something waterproof. Seriously.
That said, the unpredictability cuts both ways. On a clear March day, Byblos is quietly stunning. The Phoenician ruins, the Crusader castle, the old harbour — none of it is heaving with tourists yet. The summer crowds that turn the old souk into a slow-moving shuffle haven’t arrived, so you can actually stand in the archaeological site and think, rather than waiting for someone to move out of your shot. It’s one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth and in March it’s possible to feel that weight without someone’s selfie stick in your peripheral vision.
Most things are open, though hours can be reduced and a handful of the smaller restaurants in the old quarter operate on reduced schedules or close mid-week. The famous Byblos fishing harbour still has its working boats and the fish restaurants that line it are generally operating. The archaeological site itself stays open year-round.
Is it worth it in March? If you’re a history person or a slow-travel type who actually wants to absorb a place, yes, strongly. If you’re coming for the beach club scene or the buzzy summer nightlife energy Byblos gets known for, genuinely wait until June.
The practical tip: don’t rent a car just to get there. The shared service taxis from Beirut’s Cola transport hub run regularly, cost very little, and drop you close to the old city. Getting back can feel slightly more complicated, but it never actually is. Ask any local and someone will sort you out.
