# Cascais in September: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About Enough
September is genuinely one of the better times to visit Cascais, and I say that as someone who’s been there in peak July and wanted to cry at the beach parking situation.
The crowds thin out noticeably after the first week once European school holidays end. You can actually get a table at a decent restaurant without waiting 45 minutes on a pavement, and the beaches – Praia da Rainha, Praia da Conceição – become manageable again. You’ll still see plenty of tourists, let’s be honest, but it feels like a town rather than a theme park version of itself.
At 24°C the weather is genuinely lovely. It’s warm enough to swim comfortably and eat outside every evening, but that brutal scorching heat that flattens you in August is gone. The Atlantic breeze does its thing. The 20mm of rain across the month sounds alarming but realistically means one or two grey afternoons rather than anything that ruins a trip. Pack a light layer for evenings regardless – the coast gets breezy once the sun drops.
Everything remains open in September. Restaurants, boat trips, the train line running along the coast to Estoril and into Lisbon, the Museu do Mar. The market still runs. This isn’t a shoulder season where half the good places have shuttered – it’s properly operational.
Worth it for whom? Honestly, most people. Couples, solo travellers, anyone who finds August crowds exhausting. Families with young children especially benefit since costs drop slightly and beaches aren’t sardine-can situations. It’s less ideal if your entire goal is a buzzing nightlife scene – that energy fades a bit with the summer crowd.
**One practical tip:** book your accommodation early anyway. September has become popular precisely because word is getting out about it being the sweet spot, and the good smaller guesthouses fill up faster than you’d expect. Don’t assume late availability means easy pickings.
Cascais in September feels like the destination finally exhales. It’s worth it.
