# Kefalonia in June: The Sweet Spot Before the Madness
Honestly, if someone asked me when to visit Kefalonia, June would be my first answer. Not peak July-August, not the slightly unpredictable May. June is when the island feels like it’s finally woken up but hasn’t yet lost its mind.
**What the weather is actually like**
That 27.5°C average is real and it’s genuinely pleasant. You’ll get warm, sunny days without the suffocating heat of August when hitting 35°C becomes routine and you spend afternoons hiding indoors. There’s maybe one or two days of rain across the whole month — light stuff, usually gone by morning. The sea is around 22-23°C, which is comfortable for swimming though not the bathtub warmth of later summer. Take a light layer for evenings because the temperature does drop, particularly if you’re up near Assos or Fiscardo.
**Crowds and atmosphere**
Early June is genuinely quiet. Myrtos Beach — that famous postcard image — is actually enjoyable rather than a car park surrounded by bodies. By late June things pick up noticeably, particularly around the 20th onwards when European school holidays begin. The roads become busier, Argostoli gets livelier, and Fiscardo (already the poshest corner of the island) starts filling with yacht people. It’s not overwhelming, but you can feel the shift happening.
**What’s open**
Everything. That’s the honest answer. Restaurants, boat trips, cave tours at Melissani and Drogarati, car hire — all fully operational. You won’t encounter the half-shuttered island you sometimes find in early May.
**Is it worth it, and for whom?**
Absolutely, especially if you’re travelling as a couple, with older kids, or simply hate elbow-to-elbow beach situations. It’s less ideal if you want the buzzy, every-bar-packed nightlife atmosphere — that genuinely belongs to July and August.
**One practical tip**
Book your rental car before you arrive. June demand is higher than people expect, the island’s public transport is limited at best, and without wheels you’ll miss half of what makes Kefalonia worth the trip.
