Many visitors rush straight to Pompeii itself and skip the museum entirely. Don’t do that. Do both, ideally the museum first. Pompeii as a day trip is absolutely worth the hassle, though manage your expectations: it’s vast, the summer heat is punishing, and significant sections are always closed for restoration.
Spaccanapoli — the long straight street cutting through the old city — is electric and chaotic and genuinely exciting. Castel dell’Ovo sitting on its little island at sunset is beautiful. The street food scene is relentless and delicious.
Now, honestly? Naples is also exhausting. The traffic is genuinely lawless. Petty theft is a real concern, particularly around the train station, and you need to stay switched on in ways you don’t in Rome or Florence. Parts of the city are noticeably rough, not in a romantic, gritty way but in a crumbling infrastructure, uncollected rubbish kind of way. The famous chaos can tip from charming to overwhelming quickly, especially if you’re travelling with people who don’t handle disorder well.
Navigating it on a mid-range budget works fine — accommodation quality is inconsistent though, so research your hotel carefully before booking.
**The verdict:** Yes, go. But go with your eyes open and your bag worn across your chest. Naples rewards curious, adaptable travellers who are genuinely interested in experiencing a city on its own terms rather than on theirs. It’s messy and magnificent and completely itself, which is rarer than it sounds. Just don’t come here expecting polished European charm, because that’s entirely not the point.
