Where to Stay in Cannes
Where to Stay in Cannes
Cannes is an unashamedly expensive destination, and if you’re going during peak season or festival time, you need to accept that upfront and book accordingly. The good news is that for luxury travelers, Cannes genuinely delivers on its promise.
The Boulevard de la Croisette is where you want to be. This iconic seafront promenade is lined with the grand palace hotels that define the city’s reputation, and staying here puts you inside the action rather than watching it from a distance. The Martinez, the Carlton, and the Majestic are the holy trinity of Croisette luxury. Each has a distinct personality. The Martinez leans contemporary and buzzy, the Carlton is classic grandeur with serious historical weight, and the Majestic sits somewhere in between with arguably the best pool setup on the strip. For the highest crowds, particularly during the Film Festival in May, these hotels become the social epicenter of the entire city. If you can afford them, stay there.
The area around Rue d’Antibes, one block inland, offers slightly more breathing room while keeping you central. Some smaller boutique luxury properties sit here at lower price points than the Croisette giants, and the shopping is genuinely excellent if that matters to you.
Avoid staying in the residential neighborhoods too far west of the Palais des Festivals. They’re quieter but you’ll feel disconnected from everything that makes Cannes worth visiting, and you’ll be paying for taxis constantly.
The honest tip for high-crowd periods is to book minimum six months out for the Croisette hotels, and twelve months isn’t excessive for festival weeks. Prices during the Film Festival can triple overnight, and rooms genuinely disappear.
The single most common booking mistake people make in Cannes is booking a hotel that sounds central on a map but sits east of the Palais, closer to the quieter residential marina area. It looks close in theory, but during festival crowds that walk feels significantly longer, and you miss the concentrated energy that justifies the trip entirely. Always verify your exact position relative to the Croisette before confirming.
