# Alghero in September: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About Enough
September in Alghero is genuinely one of those months where the hype is actually justified. The sea is sitting at its warmest after a full summer of sunshine, the air settles around 23°C which means you can walk the old town walls at midday without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked, and that 20mm of rain typically shows up as one dramatic afternoon storm that clears within an hour and makes everything smell incredible. You are not packing for wet weather. Maybe one light layer for evenings.
The crowd situation improves noticeably after the first week. Italian families and the bulk of European package tourists have gone home following the August chaos, so the beaches around Lazzaretto and the further stretches toward Capo Caccia become genuinely usable again rather than a shoulder-to-shoulder endurance test. The old town still has tourists – let’s be honest, it’s a beautiful medieval walled city on Sardinia, it’s never deserted – but you can actually sit at a table outside and hear your companion speak.
Everything remains open. Restaurants, boat trips to the Neptune Caves, the beach bars – September is still firmly within the season. You’re not arriving to find shutters down and a skeleton crew. Prices drop slightly from August peaks without the product disappearing.
Who is this month genuinely perfect for? Couples, anyone over the exhausting beach-packed-with-screaming-children phase of life, remote workers wanting warm evenings and reliable WiFi, food-focused travelers who want to actually get into a decent restaurant without booking three weeks ahead. If you’re travelling with young children who need maximum beach entertainment infrastructure, you’ll still be fine, but late July is more your scene.
**Practical tip worth knowing:** Rent a car. Alghero itself is walkable and manageable, but the best beaches and the dramatic coastline north toward Porto Conte require wheels. Public transport exists but will eat your entire day.
Go in September. It’s the locals’ favourite month for a reason they don’t particularly want spread around.
