# Bari in August: Hot, Busy, But Kind of Magic
Let me be straight with you: August in Bari is peak everything. Peak heat, peak tourists, peak Italians-on-holiday energy. Temperatures sit around 26-27°C, which sounds manageable until you’re wandering the narrow stone streets of the old town at 2pm with zero shade and the sun bouncing off every white surface directly into your soul. The 5mm of rain is basically theoretical. Don’t pack an umbrella.
The old city, Bari Vecchia, gets genuinely crowded. The women sitting outside making orecchiette by hand have become something of a pilgrimage site, and in August there’s often a small audience around them at any given moment. It’s still worth seeing, just go early morning before the tour groups arrive and the heat builds. The cathedral and the Basilica di San Nicola are both open and relatively cool inside, which you’ll appreciate more than you expect.
The seafront promenade buzzes every evening. Locals who haven’t fled to the coast are out late, eating, arguing, letting children run around at 11pm like it’s completely normal (it is, here). The evening passeggiata culture is genuinely alive in Bari in a way that feels less performed than some Italian cities. August actually suits this rhythm well.
Restaurants and shops in the old town mostly stay open, though a few neighbourhood spots might close for a week or two mid-month around Ferragosto on the 15th. The big fish market is worth an early visit. Beach clubs south of the city are operating at full capacity.
**Is it worth going in August?** If you like heat, late nights, seafood, and a city that’s actually being used by real people rather than just tourists, yes. If you hate sweating or crowds, push it to September when prices drop, temperatures ease slightly, and the whole place breathes out.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation early and get somewhere with air conditioning. This is not a request. It’s a condition of your happiness.
