# Budva in December: The Honest Version

Let me be straight with you. Budva in December is a completely different animal to the place you’ve seen in those sun-bleached Instagram photos with cocktails and packed beaches. That’s not necessarily bad. It’s just very, very different.

The weather is genuinely rough. Twelve degrees sounds mild until you’re standing in the Old Town with wind coming off the Adriatic and 240mm of rain falling that month, which is a serious amount. You will get wet. The cobblestones get slippery, your jacket earns its keep, and some days the cloud sits so low over the mountains it feels almost claustrophobic. About one week in four you’ll get something resembling pleasant winter sunshine, and those days are actually beautiful in a quiet, melancholic way.

The crowds essentially disappear. The beach bars are shuttered, the restaurants on the promenade pull down their metal blinds, and roughly two-thirds of accommodation closes entirely. Walking through the Old Town walls at dusk with almost nobody around feels genuinely atmospheric rather than tourist-performative. You’re seeing the place without its summer costume on.

What stays open tends to be the more local, year-round spots. A handful of restaurants in the Old Town, some cafes, the supermarkets, the Orthodox churches. The fortress is usually accessible. You can walk the walls without anyone breathing down your neck.

Is it worth going? Honestly, for beach holidays, absolutely not. But if you’re the kind of traveller who likes slightly melancholy off-season atmospheres, cheap accommodation, empty historic spaces and no patience for summer crowds, there’s something genuinely appealing here. Photographers in particular often love this version of Budva. Budget travellers will find prices sometimes sixty percent lower than peak season.

**One practical tip:** Don’t rely on finding food easily after 9pm. Many places close early in winter and the options thin out dramatically. Eat dinner earlier than you normally would or you’ll be standing in the rain regretting everything.

Go knowing what it is. It won’t disappoint you on those terms.
