# Dubrovnik in March: The City Without the Crowds
March in Dubrovnik is genuinely interesting, and not in a way the tourism brochures usually explain properly.
The temperature sits around 13°C, which feels colder than it sounds. That Adriatic wind cuts right through you on the city walls, and you’ll want a proper jacket rather than the light layer you might have imagined packing. There’s a reasonable 45mm of rain across the month, typically arriving as moody, atmospheric showers rather than week-long downpours. Some days are genuinely stunning – that sharp winter light on the limestone buildings is arguably more beautiful than the bleached-out haze of August.
The crowds situation is the real story. The Old Town actually feels like a place where people live rather than a human traffic jam. You can walk the city walls without stopping every thirty seconds for someone’s Instagram moment, sit in Stradun without fighting for pavement space, and hear actual silence in the side streets. If you’ve seen footage of summer Dubrovnik and felt quietly horrified, March is your answer.
Most things are open, but not everything. The majority of restaurants and cafes operate, though some take their winter break in February and ease back in mid-March. A handful of tourist-facing businesses are still shuttered. The cable car typically runs, weather permitting. Fort Lovrijenac, the Sea Organ at Lokrum – all accessible. Day trips to Lokrum Island may run limited schedules worth checking in advance.
Is it worth visiting? Honestly, for the right person, absolutely yes. If you love history, walking, good food, and genuinely experiencing a place rather than processing it like an attraction, March is excellent. If you’re expecting beach weather and buzzing nightlife, you’ll be disappointed and cold.
It’s not ideal for families with young children hoping for outdoor activities, and the water is far too cold for swimming.
**One practical tip:** Book a table at a good restaurant for Saturday night before you travel. Even in low season, the better places fill up because locals actually use them again.
