# Formentera in December: The Honest Version
Let’s be straight with you: Formentera in December is a completely different island to the one plastered across Instagram. And depending on what you’re after, that’s either a problem or exactly the point.
The weather sits around 16°C, which sounds almost reasonable until the wind comes off the water. You’ll want a proper jacket, not just a light layer you stuffed in hopefully. Expect around 30mm of rain across the month, usually arriving in short, moody bursts rather than sustained downpours. Some days are genuinely beautiful – crisp, clear, that extraordinary light bouncing off water that’s still impossibly turquoise even in winter. Other days feel a bit grey and forgotten. You won’t know which you’re getting until you’re there.
The crowds essentially disappear. This is the single most dramatic transformation any Mediterranean island undergoes between seasons. The beaches that were shoulder-to-shoulder in August are now completely empty. You can walk the entire length of Ses Illetes and encounter almost nobody. If solitude and space matter to you, this is honestly spectacular.
The catch is that plenty of places are shut. A significant chunk of restaurants, beach bars, and rental shops close entirely from November through March. Ses Salines village has some life, and Sant Francesc Xavier keeps a few reliable spots open year-round, but don’t expect much variety. You’re not coming here for a buzzing food scene in December.
So who should actually come? Cyclists, hikers, photographers, people recovering from something, couples wanting quiet, anyone slightly burnt out by noise. The flat island roads with almost zero traffic in winter are genuinely wonderful for cycling. The walking paths through the interior have a real stillness to them.
Who should probably wait? Anyone wanting beach swimming, lively evenings, or a social holiday.
**One practical tip:** Call ahead before you go anywhere specific. Seriously, don’t assume anything is open based on Google listings or last year’s reviews. Things close without much online announcement, and showing up to a shuttered restaurant on a dark December evening gets old quickly.
