Visiting Hydra in March

Weather in March: Average high 15.5°C, 45mm rainfall.

# Hydra in March: Quiet, Slightly Damp, Genuinely Lovely

Look, March on Hydra is not the postcard version. The bougainvillea isn’t out yet, some of the better tavernas are still locked up with handwritten signs saying they’ll open “April, maybe Easter,” and there’s a reasonable chance you’ll spend at least one afternoon watching rain streak down your guesthouse window while questioning your life choices.

And honestly? It’s still worth it.

The island in March belongs to almost nobody. The donkeys outnumber tourists pretty comfortably. You can walk the port in the morning with a coffee and feel like you’ve stumbled into someone’s actual village rather than a stage set built for Instagram. The permanent residents — fishermen, cats, the guy who seems to run three businesses simultaneously — are visible and unhurried in a way they simply aren’t in July.

15.5°C means layers, not a coat crisis. It’s the kind of temperature where a long walk to Kamini or up toward the monastery feels genuinely pleasurable rather than a sweaty ordeal. The hillside paths are green and dramatic. The sea is too cold to swim, but it looks spectacular under grey skies in a way that’s almost more impressive than the blue-sky version.

Expect roughly a third of businesses to be closed. The basics are reliably open — a few cafes, a handful of tavernas, the small supermarkets, the pharmacy. You won’t starve or go thirsty. You just can’t be precious about having options.

March suits walkers, people who read actual books on trips, couples who don’t need entertainment infrastructure, and anyone experiencing mild burnout who wants somewhere beautiful and genuinely quiet. It does not suit people who need a buzzing social scene or full restaurant choice.

**One practical tip:** Book accommodation before you go, even though it feels unnecessary given how empty the island is. Several places operate on skeleton staff or need advance notice to actually open your room. Showing up and wandering around hoping something has vacancy works in summer. In March it’s just cold and optimistic.
