# Kalkan in August: What You’re Actually Getting Into

Let’s be straight with you: August in Kalkan is hot. Not “ooh, lovely and warm” hot — properly, relentlessly, sit-in-the-shade-and-don’t-move hot. That 33°C average is the temperature in the shade, and when you factor in direct sun bouncing off white-washed walls and concrete, it feels considerably more brutal. The 6mm of rain is essentially nothing — you might get one brief shower the entire month, if that.

The town itself is absolutely rammed. Kalkan has a relatively small old town with narrow streets, and in August those streets are packed with a predominantly British crowd — families, couples, villa renters — all doing the same loop between the harbour, the rooftop restaurants, and the beach club pontoons. It’s not Marmaris-level chaos, but don’t expect the quiet, unspoiled gem people describe from October visits.

Everything is open, which is genuinely the upside. Every rooftop bar, every boat trip operator, every harbour restaurant — all running at full capacity. The sea temperature is around 28°C and the water visibility is excellent for snorkelling. Boat trips to the sunken city at Kekova and the sea caves are all operating daily.

So is it worth it? For villa holidaymakers with a private pool who want to use it as a base rather than exploring on foot at midday — absolutely yes. For people who want to wander leisurely or get a romantic, unhurried experience of the town — honestly, consider late September or October instead. The heat makes heavy sightseeing genuinely unpleasant, and the crowds thin your enjoyment of Kalkan’s biggest charm, which is the atmosphere.

**One practical tip:** Book your harbour restaurant table in advance — not the day before, but before you leave home. The best spots like Aubergine or Lemon Garden fill completely, and showing up hoping for a table means eating somewhere mediocre while watching other people enjoy the view you came for.

August works. Just go in knowing what you’re signing up for.
