# Cascais in February: The Honest Version
Look, February in Cascais is not the sun-drenched postcard version. The Atlantic does what the Atlantic wants in winter, and what it wants is to be dramatic. Expect around 10-11°C most days, which feels colder than it sounds because the wind coming off the ocean has real opinions. You’ll need a proper jacket, not just a light layer. There will be rain – around 50mm across the month means you’re not getting soaked every single day, but you’ll definitely have grey, damp stretches where the promenade looks more like a Turner painting than an Instagram story.
Here’s the thing though – that’s actually part of the appeal.
The crowds are essentially gone. The town genuinely belongs to locals in February, and Cascais has real local life worth seeing. The cafés along the pedestrian centre fill up with actual residents eating *pastéis de nata* and arguing about football. The market runs normally. Restaurants that spend summer turning tables every 45 minutes will suddenly have time to talk to you. Prices drop noticeably on accommodation – you can stay somewhere genuinely nice for what would get you a mediocre room in August.
Most things remain open. The museums, including the excellent Casa das Histórias Paula Rego with its striking red towers, operate normally. The Boca do Inferno coastal walk is arguably *better* in rough weather – waves crashing into the rock formation the way they’re supposed to, not performing gently for tourists. The town centre restaurants are open, though you might find slightly reduced hours on weekdays.
Is it worth it? For the right person, absolutely yes. If you want warmth and beach time, book a different month or go to the Algarve. But if you want a charming, functioning Portuguese town at a human pace, with the ocean being genuinely wild and beautiful, February delivers something real.
**One practical tip:** Pack waterproof shoes you can actually walk in. The cobblestones get properly slippery when wet, and you’ll regret stylish-but-useless footwear within about twenty minutes.
