# Milos in March: Honest Thoughts

March on Milos is genuinely lovely, but it requires the right mindset going in.

The weather is mild rather than warm. At around 16°C you’re comfortable walking around in a light jacket, but you’re absolutely not swimming unless you’re the kind of person who treats cold water as a personality trait. The sea temperature lags well behind the air, sitting around 15°C, which is firmly in the “brave dip only” category. Rain is real – roughly 45mm spread across the month means you’ll almost certainly catch a grey day or two. The light shifts constantly though, and honestly some of the most dramatic photos of those famous coloured rocks at Sarakiniko come from overcast skies rather than blazing sunshine.

Crowds are essentially nonexistent. This is the main event. Kleftiko, which spends summer looking like a floating car park of tour boats, belongs almost entirely to you. You can walk through Plaka without a selfie stick grazing your ear. Locals are genuinely relaxed and chatty because they’re not exhausted yet.

The trade-off is that some things are closed or operating reduced hours. Expect certain tavernas and boat tour operators to be shut or running skeleton schedules. Transport connections are thinner. You’ll need to be slightly more flexible and do a bit more checking ahead than you would in July. Not a dealbreaker, just a reality.

Worth visiting? Absolutely yes, for specific people. If you’re into photography, hiking the island’s volcanic trails, or simply wandering without feeling managed, March is quietly brilliant. Couples looking for somewhere unhurried will love it. Beach holiday seekers wanting guaranteed sun and swimming should wait until at least late May.

The island has a genuinely melancholy, beautiful atmosphere off-season that summer completely erases. Some places are better appreciated before the crowds arrive to tell you how beautiful they are.

**Practical tip:** Rent a car immediately. With fewer services running, the island’s scattered beaches and villages become frustrating without your own transport. Book it before you arrive – the small local rental places fill up even in March.
