Lagos sits on the western Algarve coast and pulls enormous crowds from June through September, which means where you book matters as much as when you book. For mid-range travelers, the sweet spot is staying in or just outside the old town, known as the historic center. Streets like Rua 25 de Abril and Rua Cândido dos Reis put you within walking distance of the beaches, restaurants, and the marina without requiring a car. Guesthouses and smaller boutique hotels here typically run between 80 and 150 euros per night during peak season and offer far more character than the larger resort complexes on the outskirts.

The area around Meia Praia, the long sandy stretch northeast of town, suits mid-range travelers who want a quieter base. A handful of well-regarded hotels sit here, and the beach is significantly less packed than Praia Dona Ana or Praia do Camilo. The tradeoff is that you will need a taxi or rental bike to reach the town center regularly, which adds up over a week.

Avoid booking anywhere marketed primarily as a party accommodation near the Avenida dos Descobrimentos waterfront strip. This area gets loud well past midnight throughout summer, and sleep quality suffers noticeably regardless of what the listing promises about soundproofing.

Budget travelers can find perfectly decent rooms in residenciais, the traditional Portuguese guesthouses scattered through the historic center. These rarely appear on major booking platforms and are best found by walking the streets yourself or calling ahead in Portuguese. Splurge travelers should look at smaller design hotels with rooftop access near the old town walls rather than five-star resort complexes, which tend to feel isolated and require constant transfers.

The booking mistake most visitors make is filtering only by price and ignoring the cancellation policy. Lagos hotels during peak season often charge full payment upfront with no refund window. Flights change, plans shift, and losing three nights of accommodation costs because of a rigid policy is entirely avoidable if you read the fine print before confirming.
