So here’s the thing about May in Praia da Luz – it sits in that slightly awkward shoulder season where you genuinely don’t know quite what you’re going to get, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing.

The weather can be lovely. Temperatures typically hover somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties, which feels pleasant rather than punishing, and you’ll probably get stretches of proper sunshine. But you can also hit a grey, breezy week where the Atlantic reminds you it’s still doing its own thing. Rainfall is genuinely variable – some May weeks are completely dry, others see real showers. Pack a light layer and accept the uncertainty rather than banking on wall-to-wall blue skies.

What’s actually nice about this is the village itself. Praia da Luz is a small, fairly quiet place at the best of times, and in May it hasn’t yet filled with the summer crowd. The beach is walkable without negotiating around sun loungers. You can get a table at a restaurant without planning three days ahead. The pace feels genuinely relaxed rather than performatively relaxed if you know what I mean. Most restaurants and bars are open by now – the real winter shutdowns are done – though occasionally you’ll find somewhere still doing reduced hours.

The sea is cold. Don’t let anyone romanticise this. The Atlantic off this stretch of the Algarve takes its time warming up, and May swimming requires either a wetsuit or a fairly high tolerance for discomfort. Paddling, fine. Committed swimming, brace yourself.

Is it worth visiting in May? Honestly, yes – particularly if you’re someone who finds July and August insufferable, likes walking the coastal paths without sweating through your clothes, and values having a bit of space around you. It suits couples, older travellers, and anyone who wants the Algarve without the full summer machinery running.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation anyway. May is increasingly popular with exactly the kind of traveller described above, and the good smaller places fill up faster than you’d expect.
